Each January, Bronco Mendenhall puts out the call for team leaders. The old guard—the seniors—have played their last game, and with them most of the team captains are suddenly gone from the locker room. This year, two weeks after the Las Vegas Bowl, Coach Mendenhall made the call again, telling his team he needed new players to step up. Soon afterwards, the team voted for position captains. Most were seniors, but at least one was not. In fact, this player had started only one game as a sophomore last year, but throughout the season he had earned the entire team’s respect.

Less than a week after LSU beat Ohio State in the BCS Championship game, the press began to publish early rankings for the 2008 season. These rankings will somehow evolve and mutate up until the beginning of the season. We reported a few days ago on an offensive line prospect from a small school in Nevada that pledged to play for Cal without actually having received a scholarship offer. That story reached its embarrassing conclusion on Wednesday.

Kevin Hart, the athlete in question, admitted to investigators that he made the whole thing up in a desperate attempt to live out his dream of playing big-time college football. Here’s the link to the report on Sports Illustrated:
