As college football fans across the nation frantically search for news, polls and the like to cope with the last few weeks of summer, one particularly hot topic has surrounded teams with the potential to become “the next Boise State.” While no team in America would want to don similarly hideous uniforms, there are quite a few teams with aspirations of crashing the BCS and knocking off a big-name team in dramatic fashion, a la Boise State in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Media outlets have indulged the masses with a steady stream of Boise State references, but what does it mean for BYU that Boise State is receiving so much national attention?

Today’s practice marks the half-way point of fall football camp for BYU, and if you’re like me, it has taken forever just to get this far. However, the time has been very enlightening to us, the fans–perhaps in a way similar to the coaches themselves. Positions and players deemed “question marks” on the roster have had time to bend the question mark into an exclamation point (for better or worse), so let’s look at the how the pre-camp issues have played out to this point:

In a 1950 movie adapted from a Pulitzer-Prize-winning play, James Stewart consorts with a six-foot-tall rabbit named Harvey. Unfortunately for Stewart, nobody else can see the rabbit. For the past year, that’s been the case with BYU’s own six-foot missing running back—Harvey Unga. Fortunately for Mr. Unga, and BYU fans, he should be very visible come September 1st.

In the article on Thursday I mentioned that Dustin Gabriel elected to have surgery on his feet, ending his season and potentially his career. During Saturday’s scrimmage, another starter went down with what looks to be a season-ending knee injury.
