At long last, the college football season has arrived! Even before BYU takes on Arizona on Saturday, the Mountain West Conference has a chance to make an early statement about the strength of its top teams. Utah squares off against Oregon State in Corvallis, and BYU fans should be hoping that the Utes can pull off the upset.

A year ago today, some BYU players were anticipating their first game against of the season, wondering if they could actually beat Arizona. Many had played during the dark years of ‘03 and ‘04 and still hadn’t bought in to Coach Mendenhall’s philosophy of total preparation before the game and total domination during. After suffering a close loss that night, Coach Mendenhall said his main objective would be to reverse the team’s expectations—from that of losing big games to winning them.

BYU fans are already getting a taste of how this year’s team is different from last year. Last year’s team leaders let their play do the talking, always speaking respectfully in pre- and post-game interviews. For better or worse, that’s not happening this year.
